When I got an email from Eurostar inviting me for a one-day press trip to London and opportunity to try the new menu Blanc prepared by Raymond Blanc, French chef you might know from Masterchef, I could’t say no.
One, it’s hard to say no to food, two I can rarely say no to London. I adore this fast paced city, especially for the variety of food available there and the prop shops full of unique items and rare finds I then use in my food photography.
The day started at the Brussels Midi Station, where we were welcomed with a shopping bag (how handy!) full of London tips and even a discount shopping card! Once in the train, the VIP treatment continued with champagne, gifts and of course, le déjeuner Blanc put together by Raymond Blanc.
The idea behind the menu is wonderful: serve seasonal and locally sourced delicious food on to the plates of Eurostar Standard Premier travelers. My menu consisted of white asparagus with lemon sauce, salted cod fish with haricot coco beans, regalau cheese and poached white peach in rice pudding. And a lot of champagne. From experience I can tell you, definitely not your standard on-board meal.
Once in London, we had a drink on a sunny terrace enjoying more champagne and the company of Raymond Blanc who also arrived by train with our Paris blogger friends. He was charming and passionate, sharing some of his thoughts behind the menu and his take on cooking in general. The man who seemed so strict on TV turned out to be a genuinely nice and lovely person in real life.
You probably already know my obsession with local markets that I try to visit every time I am abroad, getting to know the local produce and discovering new ingredients. My trip to London was no different: Borough Market is one of my favorites and I seem to keep going back there almost every time I’m in London. My husband and I were then joined by my sister and a friend and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon together, mainly eating and having drinks on a terrace. Ok ok, and doing some minor shopping!
Big thumbs up to Eurostar for the invite – it was a perfect little Friday get-away!
